Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has today welcomed news that the Scottish Government will commit £200m to the Tay Cities Deal.

The deal, which has the potential to create up to 15,000 jobs, will see combined funding from Holyrood and Westminster, and was expected to be funded on a 50:50 basis. Recent statements by Lord Duncan, however, have suggested that the UK Government would only be willing to fund up to 30% of the total cost.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“The Scottish Government’s announcement of £200m funding is further proof of our commitment to the region.

“The Tay Cities Deal has the potential to radically transform the entire region for the better – spurring economic growth and further establishing Tayside as hotbed of culture. This potential will only be realised, however, if the UK Government live up to their word and fully match the SNP’s spending pledge.

“Now is not the time for timidity or penny-pinching. Rather, the Tories must show the same boldness and belief in the region that the Scottish Government has displayed with this significant funding pledge.”
